The Robot Arm Is Already There. They’re Teaching It to Find the Weld.

Forge Robotics is starting with vision and welding in metal fabrication. Its larger ambition begins with making existing arms more useful.

A robot arm that needs a specialist every time the part changes comes with a fairly important asterisk.

Forge Robotics is going after that asterisk.

The early company is developing vision and control technology for metal fabrication, starting with welding. In its public launch, Forge describes a robot-mounted vision system that maps the work, identifies seams and guides the arm.

That gives us a specific reason to pay attention. The workpiece is real. It might arrive slightly different from the last one. The system has to figure out where the useful action should happen.

There is a lot more to a good weld than finding a line, of course. Fit-up, materials, access and process quality all matter. Seeing the seam is part of a much larger job.

Forge’s ambition is to extend into more of the fabrication process. We’re reading that as a roadmap. What matters first is whether the initial system can handle customer parts reliably enough to justify its place in a shop.

That’s the stage we like to watch. Before a company gets to turn a narrow success into a giant story, it has to earn the success.

The interesting upside is practical. If changing the work takes less specialist programming, robotic welding could make sense for more of the jobs a fabricator actually receives.

More useful hours from equipment. Less time teaching the same arm what changed.

We’ll be watching the gap between a controlled demonstration and a shop with awkward parts, deadlines and people who have heard plenty of automation promises already.

Forge has chosen a problem where those people can tell you very quickly whether you’ve built something worth a damn.
