They Want to Automate the Excavator You Already Own.

Flywheel AI is starting with remote control for existing excavators and using the work to collect data for future autonomy.

An excavator is an expensive thing to replace just because someone has a new software idea.

Flywheel AI is starting with the machine already on the site.

The early team is developing retrofit equipment and remote controls for excavators. In its public launch, it describes using teleoperated work to collect data for automating construction tasks over time.

There is a practical sequence here that we like. Get access to the machine. Make remote operation useful. Learn from the work that actually happens.

Each step has to earn the right to lead to the next one.

A remote control system has its own demanding requirements. Operators need to understand what is happening around the machine. Supervisors need a way to take over. A connection problem cannot become everyone else’s emergency.

Flywheel describes controls and intervention features in its launch. We’d want to see how they perform under customer conditions before drawing conclusions about deployment readiness.

The autonomy part is a further ambition. Collecting data from a task does not automatically produce a system that can perform it safely on its own.

Still, there’s something useful about building around existing equipment. Contractors have already made a major investment. A product that improves that equipment has a different route into the operation from one that asks them to buy a whole new fleet.

We’re watching for evidence that operators want to keep using it after the first trial, and for a clear account of which tasks become automated next.

There is a lot of future to talk about in construction robotics.

Flywheel is starting by getting its hands on the controls.
