Try producing enough of them, keeping them working and getting them where they’re needed.
Albacore, founded by Dante Vaisbort and John Huddleston, is developing long-range drone submarines. Its public materials put manufacturing at the centre of the pitch: underwater systems designed to be produced in volume.
The founders have an unusual combination of backgrounds. Vaisbort studied classics before building defence technology companies. Huddleston is a mechanical engineer who worked on autonomous systems and manufacturing advisory projects.
The company’s claims about vehicle capability are its own. We’re interested in the questions behind those claims rather than treating a launch description as an operational record.
What can the team build consistently? How much testing does each vehicle require? What happens when something needs servicing? Does producing more units make the system easier to support or multiply the problems?
That is a substantial part of the robotics business in any environment. Underwater, the consequences of getting the details wrong are particularly unforgiving.
Our read is that the manufacturing emphasis makes Albacore worth following. There is a big difference between a successful prototype and a product an organisation can procure, operate and maintain repeatedly.
We want to see evidence that the team can close that distance.
The ocean gives this story its scale. The less glamorous work of parts, production and support will probably decide how far it goes.
A small company has decided to take all of that on.
That’s enough to get it onto our watchlist. Now it has to build.
