THE OPINIONS

You Raised Money. Tell Us What You Can Do With It.

The interesting part of a funding round is the work it makes possible. Start there and the announcement might actually be worth reading.

Congratulations on the round.

Now tell us what changes on Monday.

Can you run an experiment you couldn’t afford? Build a second machine? Hire the person who understands the part of the problem your team keeps getting wrong?

Can a customer finally get the thing they’ve been waiting for?

That is the interesting story.

Funding announcements have a habit of treating the money as the result. The amount gets the headline. The investor list takes a lap. Somebody explains that the market is enormous and the team is uniquely positioned.

By the end, we still don’t know what the company is going to build.

A useful announcement could be much simpler. Here is the constraint we hit. Here is what the capital lets us attempt. Here is what we need to learn before the next stage makes sense.

That would also make the ambition easier to believe. A founder who can describe the next difficult milestone probably understands more than one who can only describe the eventual market size.

And sometimes the milestone is unglamorous. Getting manufacturing consistent. Reducing the time required to onboard a customer. Making support work without the founder answering every message.

Those can be the things that let a company grow.

We’re happy founders get the resources to keep going. Building is expensive, uncertainty is real and a little breathing room can change what a team is able to attempt.

We just want to hear about the attempt.

You got the money. What does it let you make possible?
