A tiny scratch is a stupid reason to throw away an expensive device.

It is also exactly the kind of problem that disappears when people talk about the future of manufacturing in vague, impressive sentences.

Erica Diaz has spent time closer to the problem. Her public founder profile describes years designing hardware at Meta, Google and Magic Leap, including work with manufacturing vendors in China and Mexico.

Now she’s building Hundred with Imani Gosserand and Iris Liao.

The company is developing an inspection system for consumer electronics components. Its approach uses controlled lighting and imaging to examine parts before defects get carried into a finished product.

There is something satisfying about a founder picking the thing that seems too small to headline a keynote.

Because small is relative. A cosmetic defect might be tiny. Discovering it after you have paid to assemble the rest of the device is a much bigger fucking problem.

Our read is that Diaz’s background gives this particular bet some weight. Designing hardware means making decisions that eventually have to survive suppliers, materials, tolerances and production. An image that looks good on a screen gets a very different kind of review on a factory floor.

Hundred is early. Its claims about inspection performance still need to hold up across different parts and customer conditions. We’re interested in whether the team can make adoption straightforward when a product design changes.

That is where a useful inspection tool could become part of how a factory works.

Diaz has chosen a narrow, measurable problem. You can point to the defect. You can count what slips through.

That gives the ambition somewhere concrete to start.
